Book review- The Mortal Instruments ~ City of Bones

City of Bones is the first novel in Cassandra Clares The Mortal Instruments series. The series will contain 6 YA (Young adult) novels.
Book summary:  When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder -- much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing―not even a smear of blood―to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know...

Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare's ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end. (From Goodreads)

I'd like to start off by talking about the plot. The story line was fairly original, but of course its not the first we've seen of demon hunters. Clare managed to make demon hunters her own, by giving us a new perspective. Now known as Showdowhunters, we get to see a completely new world of demons and other creatures. The major events were well spaced well, and the plot moved along at a nice, steady pace. The book contains a fair amount of conflict that will keep you on your toes the whole time.
The character development was probably one of the best parts of the book. Clare manages to tell you so much about each character just by the things they do or say. You learn a good amount about all the basic characters within the first half of the novel. The characters are easy to fall in love with, and I can guarantee you'll wish you were Clary by the end of the book. Clary is a strong willed and fiery girl, which is a nice change from most novels where the girls are completely helpless. Clare has obviously put a lot of thought into her characters, and it really shows throughout the novel.
The world in which TMI takes place is completely made up in the fabulous mind of Cassandra Clare herself. The Shadowhunters live in their own world, hidden within our own. The world is well described and incorporated in the novel, and it helps you get beautiful mental images.
Now, whats a YA novel without romance? Nothing. So for all you fellow hopeless romantics, TMI gives you just what you need. You'll easily fall in love with Jace and his amazing sense of humor, such as myself, or you may even fall for the best friend Simon. The romantic interactions between the characters are so well written. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll enjoy every moment of romantic pain this novel gives you.
Overall, City of Bones was a well written and intriguing novel to read. I loved every moment of reading it, and as soon as I finished I went out to adopt the next book, City of Ashes. This book is a great read if you're looking to get emotionally involved into a great book. I would give this book 4.5 stars out of 5, and highly recommend it.
